About this Safari
Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s most extensive seasonal floodplain, arguably holds one of the greatest wildlife concentrations on the planet. Few places boast of such remarkably diverse and approachable wildlife, making Pantanal the top wildlife destination in South America for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. One of the reasons for this spectacular array of wildlife is the sparse human population in this watery wilderness. Also, over the years, Jaguars, Giant Otters, and many other species of birds have become habituated to the boats plying along the Cuiaba River and its tributaries. We will spend considerable time and effort getting some stunning pictures of the largest cats in the Americas as they go about their activities without caring for us, floating in boats on the river alongside them.
While Jaguars dominate this wetland as the top predator, this comprehensive South & North Pantanal combined tour has an equally exciting and abundant support cast of other photogenic mammals and birds. Giant River Otters abound in these rivers, well stocked with fish. On our last tour here, we saw seventeen different Giant Anteaters, some carrying babies on their backs. Other enigmatic mammals we can hope to see and photograph are the Southern Tamandua, aka lesser Anteater, the gorgeous Ocelot, the bizarre-looking Brazilian Tapirs, Marsh, Pampas and Brown Brocket Deer, Crab-eating Fox, Six-banded and Nine-banded Armadillo, South American Coati and Azara’s Agouti. The primates we could encounter are the Hooded Capuchins, Black & Golden Howler Monkeys and the diminutive Black-tailed Marmosets. The world’s largest rodent, the Capybara, has adapted to semi-aquatic conditions and is omnipresent everywhere. Around 10 million Yacare Caiman thrive in Pantanal and are the most abundant prey of Jaguars, making this the most significant single crocodilian concentration worldwide.
