About this Safari
Dear Safari Enthusiasts,
This last May, I accompanied a group of family and friends to a most wonderful safari in Tanzania, and some of the best sightings I’ve had over decades of safaris! May is considered to be an “off-season” month in East Africa, but actually, nothing could be further than the truth! Yes, you might get an occasional rain shower, but we are also getting towards the end of the long rains, and the grass is green, wildflowers can be blooming, and there is a plethora of wildlife everywhere if you stop at the right places and put yourself in the right hands!
On this particular safari, we will start off with a couple of nights in Nairobi, to catch our breaths and to visit the Sheldrick Trust orphanage, where orphaned elephant calves are rescued, rehabilitated and rewilded. This is one of the most path-breaking wildlife success stories on the continent, and shows us a hopeful way forward.
From Nairobi, we will fly to Asilia’s Naboisho Camp in the Masai Mara conservancies. The grasses in the Main Mara Reserve may be quite tall at this time of year, making it hard to spot predators, but we will be staying in one of the private Mara conservancies, where controlled grazing on these leased Maasai lands keep the grasses short, and the predators visible. In addition to a wide array of wildlife, including some of the highest densities of big cats on the continent, we will also visit the Mara Elephant Project, to give you an idea of some of the behind-the-scenes work that is being done for pachyderms in the Masai Mara.
From the Masai Mara, we will fly over to the Serengeti NP, more specifically to eastern Serengeti, and to Asilia Africa’s Namiri Plains Camp. This area is especially good for cheetah, but also for rarer small cats like caracal & serval, and at this time of the year, it is entirely possible that we may even catch some of the migrating herds as they wend their way up north. Here is a picture from my trip there this past May…
At Namiri, we will visit the Serengeti Cheetah Project and learn about their conservation efforts from them.
Our last stop will be at the Highlands Camp in the Ngorongoro Conservation area. We will, of course, visit the iconic Crater floor about which so much has been written, but we hope also to showcase the possibility of human-wildlife coexistence here. The Maasai people have lived for centuries alongside wild animals, both carnivores and herbivores. It is instructive to see how they do this, in a world where we humans are so rapidly encroaching on wild spaces. We will talk to Maasai elders, and also do a bit of walking here to get the feel of African soil under our feet and into our souls.
This will not be a fusty old trip, I promise! But our hope is to bring you back home with a deeper insight into how our planet and its incredible biodiversity can continue to thrive with our support.
One of us from Chalo Africa will lead this trip in person. We have designed it for 12 people, sharing in 6 rooms. This could be a multi-generational family, a group of friends, or even smaller groups of strangers- we will all be friends by the time you come home!
